My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all students can achieve at high levels. I have experienced, time and time again, that if I have high expectations for my students, then they will rise to the occasion. Most importantly, I want inspire students to be lifelong learners. I strive to bring my students interests into the classom and to connect those interests to our curriculum. It is important that students always know why what we are learning in school is going to be important to them in their lives outside of school.

Students blossom when they are in an enviromnent where teachers differentiate based on student needs. I also know that in order for me to be the most successful teacher that I can be, I need to collaborate with other teachers in my professional learning community. Students don't have to be in my classroom in order to be "my student." I want to do whatever I can to help all students to be successful. I also know that other teachers have many great ideas to share with me, and together we can achieve so much more than any one of us could alone.

As a deaf education teacher, I believe very strongly in early intervention. In my classroom, we spend a great deal of time focusing on language because students must have a strong first langauage (whether that is English or American Sign Language) in order to become proficient readers and writers. I strive to make my classroom a safe environment where all learners feel respected and cared for, and where all students can develop a life long love of learning!
