Mrs. Gabel's Classroom

I am lucky to work in a classroom full of wonderful students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The students in my classroom, come to school with very different communication needs. Some students speak, others sign, and still others do a combination of the two. I meet students where they are and seek to further develop their vocabulary and communication skills. I very much enjoy working with these students both in my own classroom, and as a co-teacher in their general education classrooms. Please explore this page to get a sneak peak into some of the activites that we have done recently.

We went on a field trip to Blackhawk College to see a JJ Jones,  a deaf mime, and one of my students was called on stage. As you can see from the video, he had a blast!

Each year, we go to see a deaf performer at Blackhawk College. This year we went to see a Deaf hip hop artist named Warren "Wawa" Snipe. This is always a good time because students who are deaf and hard of hearing travel from all the surrounding school districts for this event. Often our students don't know a lot of other people who are deaf or hard of hearing, so they enjoy making new friends.

Each child in my classroom has their own camera that they use to find pictures of their vocabulary words at home and in the community.

We came up with some very creative vocabulary pictures, which you can see on the student work page of this website.

One of my students aspires to become the president when he grows up so he wrote a letter to the White House.

After sending a letter to the White House, we were so excited when we received a response back from the president himself.

During our weather unit, we made windsocks to help us figure out which way the wind was blowing.

We also learned in our weather unit that barometers measure air pressure.

We made our own barometer using a tin can, a balloon, a straw, and a note card.

We practiced making a grocery list before we went grocery shopping. Then we found the items that we needed in the store and used our money skills to help us pay at the cash register.

With the supplies that we bought grocery shopping, we made apple smiles.

During our apple unit, we tasted different varieties of apples and graphed everyone's favorite apple choice.

We love to use our microphones and hearing technology. These items help us to listen better in the classroom.

We went on a field trip to see a deaf mime named JJ Jones. After the show, he signed autographs for us.

One of our first graders even had the opportunity to go on stage and be part of JJ the mime's show.
